Softball Falls to Bowdoin and Whitewater

FT. MYERS, FL — The softball team dropped two games today to fall to 7-3 on the season. The Hawks lost to Bowdoin 8-3 in the eighth inning after Bowdoin tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the seventh. In the second game, New Paltz lost to Wisconsin-Whitewater 6-0.
In the first game the Hawks took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Justine Scutaro hit an RBI single up the middle to score Lauren Motzkin who got on base with a walk and advanced to second on a single by Dale Cornelius. New Paltz tallied their second run in the bottom of the fourth when first year Jordan Paley hit a single down the right field line to score Scutaro who started the inning with a single and advanced to second on a bunt by Amalia DiTrapani.
Bowdoin started the seventh inning with a double to right field. The next batter hit a single and advanced to second on a groundout to the pitcher. Bowdoin’s Molly Nestor stepped up and hit a two run RBI double to right center to tie the ball game. The Hawks couldn’t capitalize in the bottom half, to force extra innings. In the eighth, Bowdoin took advantage of four New Paltz errors and two hits to score six runs and a take an 8-2 lead. New Paltz managed one run in the bottom of the inning for the 8-3 final.
The Hawks had four hits and left five on base, while Bowdoin registered nine hits and left six on base. Kelly O’Hea took the loss on the mound pitching the complete game and striking out five.
In game two, Victoria Kyle and Elizabeth Tong registered the only two hits of the game for New Paltz as Whitewater collected nine hits. Whitewater scored two runs in the first, one in the third and three in the fourth. Brittany O’Hara took the loss on the mound allowing seven hits, six runs, one walk and striking out three in four innings. Michelle Reinke allowed two hits in two innings and Courtney Costello threw the last inning.
New Paltz returns to action on Sunday when they play Colby in a doubleheader at 9am and 11am.
