Men’s Volleyball Drops Close Match to Vassar

NEW PALTZ, NY — The men’s volleyball team hosted #4 Vassar tonight and was swept by the Brewers 3-0 (30-28, 32-30, 32-30). The Hawks fall to 8-16 on the season, while the Brewers advance to 16-5. Junior Ryan Huberty led the Hawks with 14 kills out of the teams 50, while adding 10 digs. Sophomore Dan Liberto hit .435 on 13 kills and classmate Alex Jackson finished with nine kills. Senior Pedro Medina collected 25 digs and Michael Schneider added four kills and three blocks. Sophomore Stephen Pendleton handed out 27 assists and Mike Fink tallied 10 digs and six kills.
All three games were close and decided by two points. The Hawks led 26-22 before the Brewers battled back to even the score at 27-27. Vassar took advantage of two Hawk attack errors to go up by two and finished the game with a service error and a kill by Tom Pawlowski finalized the score at 30-28.
The second game Vassar led 28-26 before New Paltz scored the next three points to take the 29-28 lead and have the game point in their favor, but Vassar’s Scott Leserman put the ball away to tie the game for the tenth time. New Paltz responded with a kill by Liberto to again have the one point advantage but Leserman responded yet again. With the game even at 30-30 Vassar finished the game with a kill by Steve Micucci and Phil Tully.
Game three was a repeat of the second game with the scored tied at 29-29 and New Paltz taking the one point advantage on a kill by Jackson. Vassar soon responded with a kill by Pawlowski and finished the game on two attack errors by the Hawks.
The Hawks will return to action this weekend in the Endicott March Mania tournament on Saturday and Sunday. The Hawks will face MIT on Saturday at 1pm, followed by Medaille at 3pm.
