Baseball Splits Season Opener with Randolph Macon

The SUNY New Paltz baseball team opened up their season in Virgina today with a doubleheader against Randolph Macon. The Hawks won the first game 8-6, as senior Zachary Potter pitched a complete game. In the nightcap, the Hawks fell to the Yellow Jackets 19-4.
In game one, senior Kevin Paino went 3-4 with a homerun, two doubles and 4 RBI’s to lead SUNY New Paltz to a season opening victory. Paino’s first hot swing of the day, came in the first inning with a two-out, three-run homerun to put the Hawks up 4-0. The Hawks plated a single run in the second, third and forth inning, holding a 7-3 lead after four complete. Four additional Hawks had two hit performances, including senior Alex Cadmus who was 2-3 with 3 RBI’s and a run scored. Potter went the distance for the Hawks, scattering seven hits while striking out seven, for his first win of the season.
In the second game, Randolph-Macon College exploded for six runs over the first two innings and never looked back, defeating SUNY New Paltz 19-4. The Yellow Jackets batted around in both the forth and fifth innings, plating five runs in the forth and eight more in the fifth before the game was called in the sixth in due to darkness. Jonathan Shanks was tagged with the loss on the mound as New Paltz returns to action tomorrow when they face Mary Washington in a doubleheader at noon.
