Women’s Basketball Falls Short To Golden Eagles

BROCKPORT, NY — The women’s basketball team traveled to Brockport tonight for their SUNYAC opener and fell short to the Golden Eagles, 56-52.
New Paltz (2-2, 0-1 SUNYAC) took an early 11-4 lead, but Brockport’s (4-1, 1-0 SUNYAC) inside game led the Golden Eagles to take a 26-24 intermission lead. The second half was a seesaw battle with the Hawks taking a seven point lead, 37-30, at 15:52 before Brockport went on an 8-0 run for a 38-37 lead. The Hawks trailed 51-45 with five minutes to go when senior Amber Sohns hit a jump shot cutting the lead to three-points at 53-50 with a minute remaining. Brockport missed a three-point shot but controlled the offensive board was fouled. The Golden Eagles knocked down both free-throws extending the lead to five points. The Golden Eagles tacked one more free-throw before Kristen Caban made a layup at the buzzer accounting for the 56-52 final.
First year Artie Williams finished with a team high 14 points on 5-9 from the field and hauled down eight rebounds. Sohns finished with 10 points and senior Sarah Salvo chipped in with eight points. Sophomore Nicole Sarcone collected eight boards, five assists and five steals.
The Hawks return to action tomorrow when they travel to NYU for a 6pm matchup.
