Swimming Sweeps Vassar – Hopf Sets New Record in 200 Breast

The men’s and women’s swim teams traveled across the river this afternoon and swept the Vassar Brewers. The women claimed a 119-80 win, while the men soared to a 125-65 victory. The women are 6-1 on the season and the men stand at 5-1 in dual meet competition.
Junior Joelle Hopf set her second school record of the season as she broke the 200 breast in 2:27.70, the old time was 2:27.83 set by Mallory Gremple in 2004. Hopf teamed up with Samantha Graham, Liz Ruggerio and Regina Davide in the 400 medley relay to win in a time of 4:11.92. First year Christine Rieth was a double winner as she took the 50 free in 25.87 and the 100 free in 56.15.. Junior Erica Ellis claimed the 200 IM, first year Jessica Lester won the 500 free in 5:30 and sophomore Melinda Pullen won the 1000 free in 11:11.95.
On the men’s side first year David Gardner was a double winner claiming the 50 free (23.15) and the 500 free in 5:06.58. Rob Webb finished first in the 200 IM (2:04.97) and sophomore Stephen Cozzolongo won the 200 back and took thrid in the 50 free (23.81). Cozzolongo, Garnder and Webb teamed up with Matthew Demerest to touch first in the 400 medley realy in 3:48.66. First year Patrick Rathbun took the 100 free in 52.02 and finished second in the 50 free (23.30). Stefan Crain claimed the 1000 free in 11:10.84 and Zachary Lowenstein won the 200 free in 1:52.19.
