Hawks Swim Past Gators

MEADVILLE, PA — The men’s and women’s swim teams traveled to Meadville, PA to take on Allegheny College and picked up a pair of wins over the Gators. The men edged out the competition by a single point, 103-102 and the women cruised to a 128-77 victory.
The men won the 200 free relay to edge out the Gators by one point and win the meet. Brain Bennett, Stefan Crain, Zack Lowenstein and David Gardner were part of the winning relay in a time of 1:31.80. Gardner was an individual winner in the 100 free in 49.55 and finished second in the 200 free in 1:51.12. First year Pat Rathbun finished first in the 50 free in 22.95 and took second in the 100 breast in 1:04.50. The men swept the 100 back with a 1-2-3 finish. Stephen Cozzolongo won in 55.80 followed by Lowenstein in 58.30 and Johnny Fleckenstein in 59.09. Stefan Crain took second in the 1000 free in 10:50.95 and second in the 500 free in 5:34.66. Matt Demerest finished third in the 50 free (23.50) and the 100 fly (57.95). The 200 medley relay team of Cozzolongo, Rathbun, Rob Webb and Demerest finished second in 1:41.88.
On the women’s side senior Michelle Coombs and junior Joelle Hopf were both double-winners for the Hawks. Coombs claimed the 50 free in 24.68 and the 100 back in 1:00.01. Hopf won the 200 IM in 2:18.34 and broke her own varsity record in the 100 breast with a winning time of 1:08.63. Junior Erica Ellis won the 100 fly in 1:00.79 and finished second in the 200 IM in 2:18.66. First year Christine Reith won the 100 free in 55.10 and took second in the 50 free in 25.75. Rieth teamed with Allison Wells, Marissa Morris and Regina Davide to win the 200 free relay in 1:42.46.
Samantha Graham and Tiffany Sorrell finished behind Coombs in the 100 back in second (1:03.84) and third (1:04.39) place, respectively. First year Jessica Lester finished second in the 1000 free (11:21.32) and third in the 500 free (5:34.66). The 200 Medley Relay of Coombs, Hopf, Ellis and Regina Davide took second in 1:51.24 as the Gators out-touched them by three hundreths of a second.
The Hawks return to the pool next weekend Saturday November 17th when they travel to Vassar at 1:00 pm.
