NEW PALTZ — Susanna Coffey is known mainly for her portraiture. However, though her face is identifiably hers, the spectator would do well to see more than just that, since she paints beyond her identity, origin, and beliefs. Susanna Coffey is an internationally recognized artist and a professor of painting at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She received her BFA degree at the University of Connecticut at Storrs, CT, and her MFA degree at Yale School of Art, CT. Coffey is the recipient of The American Academy of Arts and Letters Award; John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship; Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award; Ragdale Foundation Residency, NEA Grant; Illinois Arts Council Fellowship and Chicago Artists Abroad. She has exhibited her work in numerous galleries and museums including Galleria Alejandro Sales, Madrid; Kwangju Biennale, South Korea; Tibor De Nagy Gallery, NY; and the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Arts, CT. Coffey’s work can be found in the collections of the MacArthur Foundation, Bryn Mawr College, PA; Minneapolis Museum of Art; and Northwestern University.
