Field Hockey Falls to Elmira 3-2

NEW PALTZ, NY — The New Paltz Field Hockey team battled with Elmira today coming up short with a 3-2 loss. The first half was a defensive battle with both teams having opportunities to score but being unable to find the back of the cage. The Hawks missed a chance to take the early lead when Jesse Moore wasn’t able to capitalize on a stroke 6:05 into the game.
New Paltz scored first off a corner opportunity with Moore knocking it in on a pass from Sarah Schloss at 44:32. Elmira answered right back with a goal of their own off a corner 1:13 later when Shannon Desgrosiellier scored off a pass from Casey Ross. New Paltz responded with a goal 1:21 later when Lauren Nicomini chipped in a crossing pass from Moore. Elmira came right back when Deanna Henson put home a goal past New Paltz keeper Jessica Malone 2:16 later on an assist from Courtney Ellis. The score remained tied until the Eagles scored with 4:26 remaining in the game when Ross found the back of the cage on a nice pass from Chelsea Jipner after a flurry in the circle.
Elmira out shot New Paltz 23-14, and had a 15-10 advantage on corners.
The Hawks fall to 5-10 overall and return to action on Wednesday at Stevens for a 7pm start.
