Field Hockey Falls 1-0 to Vassar

NEW PALTZ, NY — The field hockey team hosted cross-river rival Vassar this afternoon and dropped a tough 1-0 decision. After a back-and-forth battle for 67 minutes in the rain, Vassar’s Katherine Simon knocked in the game winning goal from Catherine Twardy. Emily Fare fed the ball to Twardy off a corner which set up Simon in front of the cage.
After a scoreless first half, Jess Moore had a one on one break away down the right side on a ball from Marissa Costello at 42:45. Moore blasted a shot, just missing the left post of the cage. Vassar’s Jordan Friedmann answered with a nail-bitting attempt of her own off a corner from Fare in the 47th minute. Friedmann took a shot on the left side and New Paltz keeper Jessica Malone dove from the right side to deny Friedmann’s shot.
Down 1-0 with three minutes remaining the Hawks battled hard to even the score. With two seconds remaining New Paltz was granted a corner but was unable to capitalize. The Hawks held a slight 11-9 shot advantage and Malone finished with eight saves. Taylor Herman and Ellie Pomerantz split time in goal, posting five and two saves respectively.
The Hawks fall to 5-12 and close out their season on Wednesday November 1st when they travel to William Paterson for a 7:00 pm match-up.
