Hawks Falls to Red Dragons in Overtime

NEW PALTZ, NY — The field hockey team hosted Oneonta this afternoon in a SUNYAC match-up and fell to the Red Dragons 3-2 in overtime. Ainsley Stoll tallied the game winner for Oneonta in the 80th minute. The Hawks dominated the game, out-shooting the Red Dragons 22-11 and held a 23-5 corner advantage.
Oneonta took a 1-0 lead 14 minutes into the game when Samantha Merritt drew New Paltz goalkeeper Elizabeth Dini out of the cage, and crossed a pass to Kathryn Kubaryk who knocked the ball into the lower left corner.
In the second stanza the Hawks took 11 corners in 12 minutes before capitalizing. First year Jess Moore fired a shot into the back of the cage off a pass from classmate Sarah Scholss at 47:29. In the 59th minute Scholss tallied a goal of her own to give the Hawks the 2-1 lead,with the assist being credited to Megan Flynn. With less than seven minutes remaining Kubaryk evened the game on a breakaway, setting the stage for Stoll’s overtime goal.
In the 72nd minute, Kubaryk was on another breakaway but this time was denied by Dini who came out of the cage and stopped the shot. Dini posted four saves in the game as the Hawks fall to 2-4 on the season and 1-1 in conference play. New Paltz returns to action on Saturday, September 22nd when they travel to Geneseo to take on the Knights at 1pm.
