2007 Women’s Tennis Preview

NEW PALTZ, NY — The 2007 New Paltz women’s tennis team has high hopes for tenth year head coach Rob Bruley as the Hawks return eight veteran players to go along with a strong first year player. The Hawks are aiming to defend their SUNYAC title and make a return appearance in the NCAA.
The top two players from a year ago return for the Knights in junior Dana Lim (New City/Clarkstown South) and senior Eri Yamakawa (Eastchester). Individually, Lim posted a 14-6 record and captured the SUNYAC first singles title, while Yamakawa breezed to an 11-2 record and won the second singles crown. Lim and Yamakawa paired up for first singles and made it the finals of the ITA Tournament and the semifinals at SUNYACs before being eliminated. Together they posted a record of 10-6.
Junior Katherine Ketigian (Garden City/Scared Heart Academy) advanced to the finals in fifth singles at the SUNYACs but was defeated. She posted a singles record of 12-4 and paired up with 2007 graduate Jen Larson to claim the number two doubles crown.
Sophomores Laura Elizabeth Bierne (Moriches/Shoreham Wading River) and Lyndsey Lovinger (Miller Place/Miller Place) who were paired at third doubles last year and won the SUNYAC title, return to the lineup. Bierne went 7-8 in singles play during her first season, while Lovinger earned a 4-5 singles mark. Sophomore Kerri Serkes (Massapequa/Massapequa) had a 31-4 record in singles competition last season and won the sixth singles SUNYAC title.
Lindsay Trifiletti (Mamoroneck/Rye Neck) and Alyssa Zulli (Riverhead) returns to the Hawks lineup and will compete for time in doubles play. Bruley is especially high on his only freshman, Stephanie Schara (Huntington/Kellenberg Memorial). The Huntington standout will most likely play at fourth singles.
The team begins their season on Saturday, September 1 when they travel to Potsdam to take on the Bears at 2:00 p.m.
