Bengals Sweep Hawks, 2-1, 6-0

NEW PALTZ, NY — The SUNY New Paltz softball team hosted Buffalo State today in a SUNYAC doubleheader and were swept 2-1, 6-0.
In game one, Buffalo State started the first inning with a homerun by Laurie Hutten for the early 1-0 lead. The Bengals added to their lead in the third on an RBI single up the middle by Jessica Mooney, to score Hutten.
The Hawks scored their lone run of the game in the bottom of the third. Joelle Von Bishcoffhausen singled and advanced to second on a single bunt by Gina Marano. Erin Fitzpatrick walked to advance all runners and load the bases. Junior Lauren Motzkin earned walked to send Von Bishcoffshausen home for the score. The Hawks tallied three hits, as the Bengals recorded five. Junior Kelly O’Hea took the loss from the pitching circle, allowing two runs on five hits with two strikeouts.
In game two, the Bengals took a 2-0 lead in the second and added three runs in the third. Buffalo State scored one run in the fifth inning. The Hawks had a chance in the sixth inning. Senior Amy O’Brien singled to start off the inning. Victoria Kyle reached on a fielder’s choice and advanced to second on a single by Motzkin. Dale Cornelius singled to advance all runners and load the bases. With two outs, Melyssa Cilmi hit a line drive to third base, and the Bengals secured the third out to escape the inning.
The Bengals out-hit the Hawks 9-4 in the game. Junior Michelle Reinke took the loss on the mound, allowing six runs on nine hits with four strikeouts.
