New Paltz Splits with Mary Washington

FREDERICKSBURG, VA — The SUNY New Paltz baseball team split its Sunday doubleheader with the University of Mary Washington, falling in the opener, 3-2, and winning the nightcap, 5-4. The Hawks are now 1-4 on the year.
In the opener, the Hawks took an early 1-0 lead in the first before the Eagles scored three runs in the second inning which would prove to be the game as the Hawks only managed one run in the third. Jim Donohue took the loss on the mound, allowing four hits and one earned run in six innings. Donohue struck out seven and walked three. Kevin Paino was three of four from the plate.
In the nightcap, the Hawks scored four runs in the fourth inning and lead 5-1 after six innings. The Eagles rallied for three runs in the seventh, but came shy in the comeback as the Hawks held on for the 5-4 victory. Paino went two of four from the plate and George Perry was one of three with two RBI. Zack Potter collected the win, allowing seven hits and four earned runs in seven innings, striking out five and walking two.
SUNY New Paltz returns to action in two weeks when they travel to Florida for spring break and will face the University of Wisconsin-Superior on March 18 at 9:00 a.m.
