Hawks Soar Past Cardinals, 72-43

NEW PALTZ, NY — The SUNY New Paltz women’s basketball team hosted the Plattsburgh Cardinals Saturday afternoon and soared to a 72-43 win. With the win the Hawks clinch fourth place in the conference regular season with a 10-6 SUNYAC record. New Paltz will host the SUNYAC quarterfinal game, for the first time in school history, on Tuesday Feb. 20th against fifth seeded Geneseo at 7 p.m.
The Hawks lead 39-21 at the half before the Cardinals came to within 10 at 43-33 with just over 12 minutes remaining. New Paltz then went on a 27-7 run over the next nine minutes to open up the game and cruise to the win. First year Maggie Farrell led the Hawks with 12 points and Kristen Sitek finished with 11 points. Senior Kristen Jackson added nine points and five boards and classmate Kerri Kelty handed out six assists.
As a team the Hawks shot 45.2% from the field and an impressive 69.2% behind the arc, hitting nine of 13. The Cardinals shot 34.6% as a team.
Before the game seniors Jackson, Kelty and Jenny Driscoll were honored for their contribution to the women’s basketball program.
