Swimming Competes at Coast Guard – Coombs Sets Two Pool Records

NEW LONDON, CT — The SUNY New Paltz men’s and women’s swimming teams traveled to the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT on Wednesday night. Senior Michelle Coombs claimed three individual events to help lead the women’s team to a 122-75 victory over the Bears. The men’s team fell to the Bears by a score of 116-75 and were led by Johnny Fleckenstein who claimed two second place finishes and was part of a winning relay.
Coombs claimed the 50 (24.37), 100 (52.63) and 500 free (5:29.40) setting pool records in the 50 and 100 events. The Hawks finished 1-2-3 in the 100 backstroke behind Katie Rapp (1:03.46), Samantha Graham (1:05.67) and Liz Delia (1:06.09). Delia touched first in the 200 IM in a time of 2:20.53 and Liz Ruggiero won the 100 butterfly in 1:02.56. Regina Davide finished the 200 free in a first place time of 2:05.67. In the 200 medley relay, Rapp, Laura Lipp, Erica Ellis, and Ashley Williamson took first in 1:56.27.
Fleckenstein took second in the 200 IM (2:08.50) and the 100 backstroke (59.33) and teamed with Stefan Crain, Kevin Kent, and Tom McCarthy for a first place finish in the 200 free relay (1:38.02). Crain won the 500 free in a time of 5:18.96 and senior Danny Lo captured the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.29. Stefan Cozzolongo grabbed third in the 200 IM (2:11.08) and 100 butterfly (57.92). In the 100 free, Brendan Lown took third in 53.47.
The Hawks will return to action on Saturday, November 18th when they host the Vassar Brewers at 1:00 p.m.
