Kelts And Gutes Set Records As Hawks Down CCNY

NEW PALTZ, NY — SUNY New Paltz defeated the City College of New York (CCNY), 17-3, this afternoon to sweep the Beavers on the year. The Hawks topped CCNY 19-2 on April 11.

In the fifth inning, a run-scoring single from senior outfielder Bill Kelts (Waterford, NY) produced two changes to the baseball record books. For Kelts, his 58th hit of the season is a new single season record. Scoring on the single was senior designated hitter Josh Gutes (Hauppauge, NY), who set a new mark for most runs scored in a career, at 98. Kelts finished the contest with three hits and three RBI to lead the Hawks, as Gutes was 1-for-4 with a RBI.

SUNY New Paltz (18-20) scored 17 runs on 15 hits, in seven innings to force an early end to the affair. Junior shortstop Daniel Garcia (Patterson, NY) joined Kelts with three hits on the afternoon, while senior outfielder Jeff Cote’ (Mechanicsville, MD), junior utility George Perry (Port Jervis, NY) and senior catcher Eric Velazquez (Chestnut Ridge, NY) each collected two hits. Cote’ knocked in two runs and scored three times to fuel the Hawks’ offense. Sophomore pitcher Neal Rosengren (White Plains, NY) earned his second win throwing five and two-thirds innings. Rosengren allowed three runs on seven hits, while walking six and striking out two.

Sophomore pitcher Darlyn Nunez (Bronx, NY) picked the loss for CCNY (11-22), allowing three earned runs in three innings of work. Senior outfielder Ruben Zorrilla (Far Rockaway, NY) led the Beavers with three hits, including a fifth inning triple.

The SUNY New Paltz baseball team will travel to SUNY Old Westbury on Monday, May 1, for a 6:00 pm non-conference contest.
