Hawks Fall to Blue Knights

GENESEO, NY — The SUNY New Paltz women’s basketball team lost this afternoon’s State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game to Geneseo, 66-49. The Hawks fall to 3-11 in the SUNYAC and 9-14 overall, while the Blue Knights advances to 10-4 in the SUNYAC and 15-8 overall.

SUNY New Paltz (9-14, 3-11) shot 29.2 percent from the field in the opening period and found themselves trailing 32-20, at the half. Though sophomore center Christine Trupiano (Massapequa, NY) scored seven first half points, Geneseo (15-8, 10-4) was able dominate the court for the first thirty-five minutes of the game. The Blue Knights would maintain their lead thanks to the stellar play of sophomore forward Annie Verdino (Yorktown Heights, NY). Verdino scored 23 points and grabbed six boards. Junior guard Katy Irving (Olean, NY) recorded 12 points off five-of-ten shooting from the field.

The Blue Knights out shot the Hawks in both halves of play. Geneseo shot 50.9 percent in the game, while SUNY New Paltz shot 39.1 percent from the field. Geneseo’s defense proved too much for the Hawks snatching up 36 rebounds, 27 defensively.

SUNY New Paltz sophomore guard Amber Sohns (Delhi, NY) led all Hawks with sixteen points and six rebounds. Junior guard Kerri Kelty (Valley Stream, NY) netted ten points, collected four rebounds, and three assists on the evening. Trupiano finished the evening with 11 points and eight rebounds in the loss.

The SUNY New Paltz women’s basketball team returns to action on Tuesday February 14, when they host conference rival Cortland at 6:00 pm.
