SUNY New Paltz Women’s Basketball Falls to Brockport, 65-52

NEW PALTZ, NY — The SUNY New Paltz women’s basketball team (6-11, 2-8) fell short at Elting Gymnasium tonight, losing 65-52, to the Golden Eagles.

Brockport (10-7, 5-3) posted a 20-point, 42-22, lead entering halftime. The Golden Eagles shot 55.2 percent from the floor to open the evening. Freshman forward Kiomi Matthews (Rochester, NY) led Brockport with 13 points in the first half. Junior guard Katie Marcella (Schenectady, NY) provided eight points and six rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while sophomore guard Ashley Broadhurst (Sauquoit, NY) scored 11 points in the first. Junior forward Kristin Jackson (East Islip, NY) led SUNY New Paltz with six points, including two-of-three shooting from behind the arch, in the opening half.

Sophomore Amber Sohns (Delhi, NY), who finished with 12 points, led the Hawks. Jackson finished with 10 points for the game. Junior guard Kerri Kelty (Valley Stream, NY) had six points and four rebounds, while sophomore forward Sarah Salvo (Manorville, NY) added 10 points.

The Golden Eagles had four players in double-figures. Broadhurst led all scorers with 18 points. Matthews recorded 15 points and eight rebounds for Brockport while sophomore forward Kim Schon (Corfu, NY) totaled 10 points on the evening.

The SUNY New Paltz women’s basketball team will host conference rival Fredonia tomorrow, Saturday, January 28 at 6 p.m.
