Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Their Way into the Semi-Finals

CORTLAND, NY — The SUNY New Paltz women’s volleyball team won its opening round match against Fredonia 3-0, in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament at Cortland this evening. Earlier in the year, the Hawks were unable to defeat Fredonia in conference play falling 0-3.

The Hawks (28-10) made short work of the Blue Devils (24-13) sweeping them in three straight games, 30-24, 30-20, and 30-27. Leading SUNY New Paltz with a balanced attack, senior middle hitter Christina Mazurowski (Tonawanda, NY) tallied seven kills and eight blocks. Senior outside hitter Andrea Kaiser (Blue Point, NY) recorded ten kills, six digs, and three blocks in the affair. Junior right side Kimberly Clouston (Baldwinsville, NY) totaled nine kills and twelve digs, while sophomore setter Katie Becofsky (Altamont, NY) paced the offense with 33 assists.

By winning tonight’s game, the Hawks, seeded number two, surpassed last years performance where they dropped the opening round match to Geneseo. With the win over Fredonia, the Hawks earn a spot in the SUNYAC semifinals for the first time since 1999. SUNY New Paltz women’s volleyball team will return to action tomorrow in the semifinals to face off against Brockport at 1:30 pm.
