SUNY New Paltz Swimming Teams Split Dual Meet With Coast Guard

NEW PALTZ, NY — The SUNY New Paltz swimming teams split this afternoon’s men’s and women’s swimming meet against Coast Guard. The women improved to 3-0 with a 116-81 defeat of the Bears, while the men fell to 1-2 with a 108-89 loss.

The SUNY New Paltz women’s swimming team was led by junior Liz Delia (Oswego, NY) and senior Joanna Masterson (Canandaigua, NY). Delia brought home a first place finish in both the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:06.49) and the 200-yard Individual Medley (2:18.48). Masterson swam with the top time in the 200-yard freestyle (2:04.81) and the 100-yard freestyle (55.78). Masterson also helped junior Katie Rapp (Liverpool, NY), freshman Joelle Hopf (Vestal, NY), and sophomore Liz Ruggiero (Congers, NY) grab first in the 200-yard Medley Relay with a time of 1:57.01. Rapp and Ruggiero took first in their individual events as well. Rapp won the 100-yard backstroke (1:04.15) and Ruggiero won the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.55). Coast Guard won their only event in the 50-yard freestyle where sophomore Joan Hunter (Warren, PA) swam to a first place finish in 25.93.

Freshman Chad Santa Maria (Rexford, NY) recorded the only top finish for the SUNY New Paltz men’s swimming team. Santa Maria took first place in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:40.47. Coast Guard was able to grab first in all the remaining menĂ½s events. Freshman Jim Okorn (Euclid, OH) swam to a top finish in the 100-yard freestyle in 50.56. Okorn also anchored the Coast Guard top finisher in the 200-yard medley relay (1:44.04); which consisted of: freshman Ryan Taylor (Dover, PA), senior Steve Brickey (St. Petersburg, FL) and freshman Chris Woods (Simsbury, CT).

The SUNY New Paltz swimming teams will travel to swim against local rival Vassar College on Saturday, November 19 at 1:00 pm.
