SUNY New Paltz Field Hockey Team Falls to Utica in Season Finale

UTICA, NY — This afternoon the SUNY New Paltz field hockey team lost their season finale, 6-2, to Utica College.

Utica College (12-4) grabbed a two-goal edge in the opening half. The Pioneers totaled four goals in the opening period to lead SUNY New Paltz (6-12) 4-2 at halftime. Sophomore midfielder Kaitlin Ruggiero (Carmel, NY) and sophomore forward Ashley Smith (Selden, NY) were credited with a goal apiece for the Hawks. Ruggiero tied the contest at one with 18:18 remaining in the half and Smith’s tally came only four minutes later. Both goals were recorded off penalty corners and assisted by senior midfielder Lisa Wong (Colts Neck, NJ). Smith finishes the season as the Hawk’s leading scorer with 11 goals and three assists (25 points).

The Pioneers scored twice more in the second half to add to their lead. The Hawks were unable to maintain their offensive success and quickly fell behind 6-2.

The SUNY New Paltz field hockey team completed the 2005 season 6-12. The following Hawks played the final game of their collegiate careers; forward Shannon Stokes (Accord, NY), midfielder Lisa Wong (Colts Neck, NJ) and midfielder Kelly Proper (Red Hook, NY).
