Pioneers Too Much For SUNY New Paltz Field Hockey Team

WAYNE, NJ — This afternoon the SUNY New Paltz field hockey team lost, 6-1, to William Paterson.

William Paterson (6-10) recorded the their first goal of the afternoon only 45 seconds into the affair. Freshmen forwards Katie Jo Cipriani (Thorofare, NJ) and Meghan Hall (Turnersville, NJ) combined to give the Pioneers the early 1-0 lead. Cipriani finished the afternoon with two goals, Hall finished with a goal and two assists.

William Paterson built a three-goal lead in the opening 26:28, but the Hawks narrowed the Pioneer advantage to two with five minutes remaining in the first half. Sophomore forward Ashley Smith (Selden, NY) scored her tenth goal of 2005 to put SUNY New Paltz (6-11) on the board. Freshman midfielder Marissa Costello (Brick, NJ) was credited with the assist.

Despite their effort, SUNY New Paltz was unable to carry the momentum into the second half as they gave way to the Pioneer offense. William Paterson would add three more tallies in the second half to ensure the 6-1 victory.

Junior goalkeeper Nicole Kovac (Manlius, NY) recorded 12 saves in the loss. Senior goalkeeper Jessie Mull (Trenton, NJ) made eight saves and earned the win.

The SUNY New Paltz field hockey team will play their final contest of the season on Tuesday, November 1 at Utica College.
