SUNY New Paltz Field Hockey Team Captures Second Win

KINGSTON, NY — This evening the SUNY New Paltz (2-7) field hockey team won their second game of the season defeating Union College (4-5) in double overtime 5-4.

With 3:42 seconds remaining in the second overtime, junior Margaret Blair (Lake Peekskill, NY) dodged two defenders and fired a perfect pass to an open Lisa Wong (Colts Neck, NJ). Wong one touched the ball past Union College freshman goalkeeper Elise Wakeland (Arundel, ME) solidifying the win for SUNY New Paltz.

In the second half, senior Sarah Klopfer (Hollis, NY) scored the go a head goal for the Dutchwomen with 2:21 left on the clock. The Hawks quickly retaliated when sophomore defender Kaitlin Ruggerio (Carmel, NY) netted the game-tying goal with only 45 seconds remaining in the game. Senior Shannon Stokes (Accord, NY) was credited with the assist. Sophomore forward Jacqueline Sisco (Wappingers Falls, NY) scored the Hawks first goal in the second half. Both Ashley Smith (Selden, NY) and Wong scored goals in the first half for the Hawks.

SUNY New Paltz recorded a season high twenty-five shots and scored a season high five goals in one game. Junior goalkeeper Nicole Kovac (Manilus, NY) tallied six saves on the night. Wakeland had nine saves in goal for the Dutchwomen.

The SUNY New Paltz field hockey will return to action on Saturday, October 1st when they host Skidmore at 4:30 pm.
