NEW PALTZ — The State University of New York at New Paltz has received a grant of $4000 from The Sallie Mae Fund to be used for College Algebra Extended, a project of the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) that brings students up to speed in college algebra, and enables them to qualify for majors in math, science and business.
“EOP’s mission is to make higher education accessible to students, and it is particularly important we provide access to a full range of curriculum choices to students once they enter college,” said Lisa Chase, director of EOP. “This College Algebra Extended curriculum is a critical stepping stone for students to enter majors in business, math and science.”
College Algebra Extended is part of EOP’s comprehensive academic support program. The goal of the course is to help students attain a math placement level, which qualifies them for pre-calculus and the majors described above.
The Educational Opportunity Program at New Paltz is a national award winning program that ranks in the top three opportunity programs statewide in terms of student retention and graduation rates. It is also the largest per-capita program in the 64-campus State University of New York system. EOP’s mission is to recruit and admit students who would not otherwise have access to higher education due to educational and financial disadvantages and to provide comprehensive services to support student success, retention, and graduation.
