SUNY New Paltz Baseball Teram Splits Doubleheader with Oswego

OSWEGO, NY — The SUNY New Paltz baseball team split their final conference doubleheader of the season with Oswego this afternoon. The Hawks fell in the opener, 6-1, before taking the second game 4-2.

In the opener, the Hawks jumped on the scoreboard early with a run in the top of the first. After reaching on a fielderýs choice, junior catcher Josh Gutes (Happauge, NY) scored on a single by sophomore left fielder Justin Buonamano (Royersford, PA). The Lakers, however, halted the Hawks at one and added a run of their own in the bottom of the fourth and five in the seventh. Gutes went 2-for-4 with a run scored and Buonamano was 1-for-4 with the RBI. Sophomore third baseman John DeKams went 3-for-4 in the loss.

Junior pitcher Joe Gugliotta (Bay Port, NY) pitched five and a third, allowed 10 hits, six runs, walked two and struck out three.

Oswego (14-13, 5-9) received a strong offensive effort from catcher Dave Johnson (North Chili, NY) and shortstop Nick Marzullo (Cicero, NY). Johnson went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and Marzullo went 1-for-4 with two runs batted in. Laker pitcher Rob Johnson (North Chili, NY) picked up the win in relief. He allowed eight hits, no runs, two walks and struck out four in seven and a third innings.

Sophomore pitcher John DeKams (Kings Point, NY) reached on an error in the sixth inning of game two, junior right fielder Jeff Coteý (Mechanicsville, MD) would score on the play. DeKams would later come around to score on a double by junior second baseman William Kelts (Waterford, NY) to put SUNY New Paltz (12-23, 4-10) in front 3-2. In top of the ninth, Coteý singled in an insurance run to put the Hawks ahead for good, 4-2.

DeKams pitched seven innings, allowed five hits, two runs, one earned, walked one and struck out eight to pick up his second win of the season. Gutes earned his fourth save in relief.

Laker second baseman Tom Farrell (Oswego, NY) went 3-for-4 and pitcher Chris Daley took the loss. He allowed three runs on eight hits, walked two and struck out five in seven and two-thirds innings.
