Hawks Fall in Match-Up of Nationally Ranked Schools

NEW PALTZ, NY — The SUNY New Paltz men’s volleyball team, ranked seventh in Division III, lost to fourth ranked Stevens Tech 3-1 this evening at Elting Gym.

SUNY New Paltz used a strong offensive attack to take the opening game 30-27. The Hawks had 18 kills and five errors for a .406 hitting percentage to take the first game.

The Ducks shook off a 28-24 deficit in game two to rally for a 30-28 win to even the match at a game apiece. In game three, Stevens Tech again seized the control late scoring four of the last five points to turn a 26-26 tie into a 30-26 victory.

SUNY New Paltz (17-9, 6-3) held an 18-13 lead before the Ducks pulled even at 22. The Hawks then took a 26-24 lead before Stevens Tech scored six of the last 10 points to win 30-28 and extend their winning streak to eight.

Junior Chris Bock (S.Africa) led the Ducks with 25 kills and hit .463 for the match. Junior Greg Higgins (Kenmore, NY) finished with 15 kills and four blocks.

SUNY New Paltz senior Chris Ganje (Halfmoon, NY) led the Hawks with 21 kills and 10 digs. Senior Mike LaRocco (Hauppauge, NY) finished with 13 kills and four digs. The loss ended the Hawks winning streak at three.

Stevens Tech, the leaders of the NECVA Metro Division, remained undefeated in conference play (11-0) and improved to 20-7 overall. The Ducks also picked up their second win of the season against the Hawks. Stevens Tech defeated SUNY New Paltz 3-1 in the season opener for both teams on January 15.
