Men’s and Women’s Swimming Teams Defeat Stevens Tech

HOBOKEN, NJ — The SUNY New Paltz men’s and women’s swimming teams each registered victories over Stevens Tech this evening.

The men prevailed 109-74 and established four DeBaun Aquatic Center records along the way. Senior Kent Yeung (Flushing, NY) won the 100-yard butterfly with a pool-record time of 55.26. Yeung was also a part of the Hawks 200 medley relay team that finished first with a facility record time of 1:42.33. Swimming with Yeung on the relay were freshman Nick Johnson (Highland Mills, NY), sophomore Chris Chaplin (Hempstead, NY) and senior Ben Yousey (Beaverfalls, NY).

Johnson went on to set a pool record in the 100 breaststroke with a mark of 1:01.86 in his first place effort.

In an exhibition race, the 200 freestyle relay team of senior Jay Sousa (Albany, NY), Yeung, freshman John Fleckenstein (Port Jefferson, NY) and sophomore Craig Gottesman (Oceanside, NY) finished first with a time of 1:33.95

With the win, SUNY New Paltz is now 3-3 in dual meets this season.

The women’s squad improved to 6-0 following a 100.5 — 81.5 victory. The SUNY New Paltz women’s swimming team has now won 12 consecutive dual meets dating back to last season.

Freshman Liz Ruggiero (Congers, NY) won the 1000 freestyle with a time of 11:48.17. Freshman Laura Lipp (Smithtown, NY) finished first in the 500 freestyle with a mark of 26.73. Lipp also won the 50 freestyle (26.73) and combined with senior Danielle Lindner (Wantagh, NY), sophomore Liz Delia (Oswego, NY) and sophomore Ashley Williamson (Holland Patent, NY) to swim 1:44.25 and finish first in the free relay.

Linder took first in the 200 IM (2:19.45) and sophomore BethAnn Salter (Long Beach, NY) was a winner in the 100 breaststroke (1:18.01).

The 200 medley relay team of sophomores Katie Rapp (Liverpool, NY) and Christina McGill (Poughquag, NY), junior Johanna Masterson (Canandaigua, NY) and sophomore Nevine Roberts (Pound Ridge, NY) led the meet off with a first place effort and a time of 2:00.25.
