SUNY New Paltz Swimming Teams Finish in Top Ten at ECAC Meet

LONG ISLAND — The SUNY New Paltz swimming teams completed the final session of the Eastern College Athletic Conference, ECAC, Championships this morning. The women finished the event in fourth, out of 12 teams, with 425.5 points. The men placed seventh, out of 12 teams, with 187.5 points.

Sophomore Liz Delia (Oswego, NY) finished the weekend as the top swimmer for the Hawks. Delia came in seventh in individual scoring with 58 points. In the 200-yard individual medley, Delia finished in fourth (2:17.03), followed by senior Danielle Lindner (Wantagh, NY) in tenth (2:21.22).

Delia and Linder would team up twice to provide the Hawks with some strong finishes. Delia and Lindner joined junior Joanna Masterson (Canandaigua, NY), and sophomore Ashley Williamson (Holland Patent, NY) to grab a second place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:43.15). Senior Mallory Grempel (Babylon, NY) competed with Delia, Lindner and Masterson in the 400-yard medley relay to seize a fourth place finish (4:12.83) for SUNY New Paltz. Masterson and Williamson also placed second (25.37) and 12th (26.48), respectively, in the 50-yard freestyle.

Sophomore Nevine Roberts (Pound Ridge, NY) finished 13th (5:34.75) in the 500-yard freestyle.

Once again the men’s top finisher was senior Kent Yeung (Flushing, NY). Yeung grabbed a fifth place finish in the 200-yard individual medley, with a time of 2:03.07. Yeung joined freshman John Fleckenstein (Port Jefferson, NY), senior Jay Sousa (Albany, NY), and sophomore Craig Gottesman (Oceanside, NY) to snare a eighth place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:25.11). Gottesman placed 37th (23.56) in the 50-yard freestyle and Fleckenstein finished the 500-yard freestyle in 18th (5:11.86).

Freshman Nick Johnson (Highland Mills, NY) and sophomore Chris Chaplin (Hempstead, NY) would team with Yeung and Sousa to swim for a seventh place finish (3:46.31) in the 400-yard medley relay.
