NEW PALTZ, NY — The SUNY New Paltz men’s and women’s swimming teams swept Oneonta this afternoon at Elting Gymnasium in their second duel meet of the season. The women took first place in all events finishing on top 118 to 79 and improve to 2-0 on the year. The men evened their record to 1-1 defeating the Red Dragons 110 to 90.
In the 200-yard butterfly, freshman Liz Ruggiero (Congers, NY) finished in first with a new varsity record of 2:17.44. The women took first in all other events as well; the team of sophomore Katie Rapp (Liverpool, NY), senior Mallory Grempel (Babylon, NY), Ruggiero and junior Joanna Masterson (Canandaigua, NY) won the 400-yard medley relay (4:14.55), sophomore Nevine Roberts (Pound Ridge, NY) won the 1000-yard freestyle (11:25.71), sophomore Liz Delia (Oswego, NY) captured the 200-yard freestyle (2:02.48), Masterson took first in the 50-yard freestyle (25.05) and the 100-yard freestyle (55.45), senior Danielle Lindner (Wantagh, NY) won the 200-yard individual medley (2:21.04) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:34.00), Rapp took first in the 200-yard backstroke (2:20.53), Grempel won the 200-yard breaststroke (2:33.18) and the team of Lindner, Delia, Roberts and senior Andrea Ditter (New Paltz, NY) took first in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:57.90).
The men took first in 8 of 11 events. Freshman John Fleckenstein (Port Jefferson, NY) took first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.40), the 500-yard freestyle (5:12.34) and was part of the first place team, of sophomore Craig Gottesman (Oceanside, NY), freshman Brendan Lown (Bohemia, NY) and sophomore Chris Chaplin (Hempstead, NY), in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:33.26).
Oneonta had the top finishers in three men’s events; sophomore Chris Rooney (Delmar, NY) took first in the 1000-yard freestyle (11:46.44), junior Bill Dergosits (Schenectady, NY) won first in the 50-yard freestyle (23.17) and freshman Peter Millspaugh (Pine Bush, NY) won the 200-yard backstroke (2:10.07).
