SUNY New Paltz Swimming Teams Split with Coast Guard

NEW LONDON, CT — The SUNY New Paltz men’s and women’s swimming teams split this afternoon’s road meet against Coast Guard. The women remained undefeated this season, 3-0, winning 104-97. The men fell to 1-2 with a 112-75 loss.

In the 1000-yard freestyle, sophomore Liz Delia (Oswego, NY) captured a pool and varsity record finishing in first with a time of 10:59.63. Delia also took first in the 500-yard freestyle (5:25.46) and teamed up with junior Joanna Masterson (Canandaigua, NY), senior Andrea Ditter (New Paltz, NY), and freshman Laura Lipp (Smithtown, NY) to swim the best time, in exhibition, in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:46.41). Masterson also claimed first in the 50-yard freestyle (25.33) and second in the 100-yard freestyle (55.37).

The other big winner on the day for the women was senior Danielle Lindner (Wantagh, NY) who claimed first in three events; the 200-yard freestyle (2:01.47), the 100-yard backstroke with a pool record of 1:02.12, and in the 200-yard medley relay with teammates; senior Mallory Grempel (Babylon, NY), freshman Liz Ruggiero (Congers, NY) and sophomore Ashley Williamson (Holland Patent, NY) (1:57.85).

In the 100-yard breaststroke, Freshman Nick Johnson (Highland Mills, NY) recorded the only first place finish for the men with a time of 1:03.06. Senior captain Kent Yeung (Flushing, NY) took second place in three events; the 200-yard individual medley (2:00.30), the 100-yard butterfly (55.74), and in the 200-yard medley relay with teammates; Johnson, sophomore Craig Gottesman (Oceanside, NY), and senior Jay Sousa (Albany, NY) (1:42.40).
