St. John Fisher Defeats Hawks in Tournament Final

PITTSFORD, NY — Tournament Most Valuable Player Missy O’Donnell scored 12 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and dished out five assists to help lead the St. John Fisher women’s basketball team to a 75-50 win over SUNY New Paltz in the championship game of the Ramada Inn Invitational this afternoon.

O’Donnell was one of four Cardinals who finished in double figures. Adrin Matonak and Jen Lardo each had 13 points and Kathy Baum added 11 to carry the Cardinals to the victory. St. John Fisher built a 14-point halftime lead (34-20) by limiting the Hawks to eight field goals (8-of-28) and 29 percent shooting.

For the second straight game, senior guard Kim Weigel (Whitestone, NY) was the Hawks leading scorer and finished with 15 points. Weigel was 6-of-12 from the field and was named to the all-tournament team. Sophomore guard Kerri Kelty (Valley Stream, NY) added 11 points, three rebounds and four assists and was named to the all-tournament team as well.

SUNY New Paltz (1-1) will play its home opener on Tuesday (Nov. 23) against Mount St. Mary at 6 p.m.
