ONEONTA, NY — The SUNY New Paltz men’s and women’s swimming teams opened up the 2004-05 season with dual meets against Hartwick College.
The women’s team prevailed 113-87 behind a first place finish from the 200-medley relay team of Danielle Lindner (Wantagh, NY), Mallory Grempel (Babylon, NY), Liz Delia (Oswego, NY) and Joanna Masterson (Canandagiua, NY).
Lindner and Masterson also claimed a pair first-place finishes in the individual events. Lindner captured the 100 backstroke (1:01.70) and the 200 freestyle (2:03.27) while Masterson took 50 and 100 freestyle events with times of 25.43 and 55.78 respectively.
Freshman Liz Ruggiero (Congers, NY) had two second place finishes in her collegiate debut. She was second in the 100 butterfly (1:05.34) and the 1,000 freestyle (11:37.86).
The men’s squad fell 113-87 in the collegiate coaching debut of Dan Talleyrand. Senior Kent Yeung (Flushing, NY) won the 100 backstroke with a time of 55.56 and teamed up with senior Jay Sousa (Albany, NY), freshman John Fleckenstein (Port Jefferson, NY) and sophomore Craig Gottesman (Oceanside, NY) to finish first in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:33.09.
Yeung also took second in the 50 freestyle (22.44) while Fleckenstein registered a second place finish in the 500 freestyle (5:18.34).
Both teams will compete at the Union Relays next weekend at Union College in Schenectady, NY.
