SUNY New Paltz Women’s Tennis Team Advances Three to Finals

EAST MANLIUS, NY — In the second day of State University of New York Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Tournament (SUNYAC), three Hawks have survived to play in the singles finals.

In number three singles, third seeded, freshman Alexandra Goldberg (Scarsdale, NY) defeated Megan Antonovich of Potsdam 6-0, 6-1 to advance to the semifinals. She then met Lisa Seelig of Oneonta, whom she defeated 6-3, 6-2 to reach the championship against Andrea TerBush of Cortland.

Sophomore Jennifer Larson (Port Jervis, NY), seeded second in number five singles, defeated Megan Pellam of Plattsburgh 6-0, 6-1. In the semifinals, Larson put away Rene Smith of Geneseo 6-3, 6-1 to advance to the finals where she will play Meredith McCaslin of Cortland.

With a 6-3, 6-2 semifinal victory over Amanda Oliver of Plattsburgh, senior Amanda Rosario (Bronx, NY) will play in the number six singles final against Lauren Eichenauer of Geneseo. The top-seeded, Rosario defeated Rachel LaPaglia of Fredonia 6-1, 6-3 to reach the semifinal round.

SUNY New Paltz was knocked from number one singles play early, when freshman Eri Yamakawa (East Chester, NY) lost to Christine Greiner of Geneseo, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6) in the first round. Senior Kerry Farrell (Rockville Center. NY), seeded third in number two singles, defeated Brigid McCarthy of Oswego 6-1, 6-0 in the opening round, but lost in the semifinal round 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 to Krissy Feikert of Geneseo. Junior Sara Goldstein (Merrick, NY) also made it to the semifinal round, after a 6-0, 6-1 defeat of Emily Longnecker of Brockport, before losing to Nicole King of Geneseo 6-2, 6-0 in the semifinal round.

In doubles, all three of SUNY New Paltz’s teams have advanced to semifinal play. In number one doubles Yamakawa and Farrell defeated Balling and Mizgala of Brockport 6-2, 6-4 to advance. They will take on Feikert and Greiner of Geneseo in the semifinals. The number two doubles team of Larson and Goldberg defeated Montmeat and Roy of Plattsburgh 6-4, 6-2 and will play Smith and Sudarsanan of Geneseo in the semifinals. In the third doubles flight, Goldstein and junior Laura Thomas (Hyde Park, NY) defeated Acito and Bermudez of Brockport 6-0, 6-2. They are still awaiting a challenger in semifinals.
