Schoonmaker Named SUNYAC Player of the Week

NEW PALTZ, NY — SUNY New Paltz junior midfielder Kate Schoonmaker (High Falls, NY — Rondout Valley HS) was named the SUNYAC Field Hockey Player of the Week this afternoon.

Schoonmaker scored three goals in two victories for the Hawks last week. She scored a goal in a 4-0 victory over Ramapo and added a pair of goals in a 4-0 triumph over conference rival Oswego. Her performance helped SUNY New Paltz tie the program’s record for wins in a season with five. In addition, the win over Oswego assured the Hawks of their first winning season in conference play in the five-year history of the program.

SUNY New Paltz, 5-7 overall and 3-1 in the SUNYAC, will host a pair of nationally ranked teams this week. The Hawks will host sixth-ranked Montclair State (10-2) on Wednesday (Oct. 13) at 7:30 p.m. and fifth-ranked SUNY Cortland (10-1) on Friday (Oct. 15) at 1:00 p.m.

Friday’s game against SUNY Cortland carries added significance. With both teams owning a 3-1 record in the SUNYAC and tied for first place, the winner will claim the SUNYAC Championship.
