Hawks Finish Seventh at NYSWCAA Tournament

ITHACA, NY — The SUNY New Paltz women’s tennis team sent five of its singles players and two of its doubles teams into the quarterfinals of the New York State Women’s Collegiate Athletic Association (NYSWCAA) Tournament and finished seventh among the 16-team field.

At number one singles, freshman Eri Yamakawa (Eastchester, NY) defeated Jess Snyder of St. John Fisher, 6-1, 6-1. The win put Yamakawa against SUNY Cortland’s Laura Dorscheid in the quarterfinals where Dorscheid prevailed 6-4, 6-3.

Senior Kerry Farrell (Rockville Center, NY) collected a 6-3, 1-6, 10-6 win over Kristen Lannon of St. Lawrence in her opening round match. In the quarterfinals, Farrell registered a 6-3 win over Erica Olsen of New York University in the first set before Olsen rallied to take the next two, 6-0 and 6-3.

Junior Sara Goldstein (Merrick, NY) won her opening round match at number four singles. Goldstein defeated Julie Scarano of Hartwick 7-6, 6-2 before falling to Elyssa Kilman of Vassar 6-4, 6-0.

Sophomore Jennifer Larson (Port Jervis, NY) claimed a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Liz Green of Hartwick in her opening round match. Larson’s victory set up a quarterfinal match with Kelly Barnett of Vassar and Barnett prevailed 6-3, 6-3.

Senior Amanda Rosario (Bronx, NY) defeated Katie Griffin of St. John Fisher 6-0, 6-4 in the opening round match at number six singles. Rosario was however eliminated in the quarterfinals by Mehak Sujan of RIT 6-2, 6-0.

Freshman Alexandra Goldberg (Scarsdale, NY) was the only Hawk who failed to get out of the first round. Goldberg was defeated by Shalini Sudarsanan of Geneseo 6-1, 6-1 at number three singles.

Two of the Hawks three doubles teams also advanced into the quarterfinals. Larson and Goldberg defeated Melanie Blass and Lindsey Brady of RIT 8-2 at number two doubles. The third doubles team of Goldstein and junior Laura Thomas (Hyde Park, NY) also advanced with a 8-4 victory over Charlotte Kaplan and Anne Marinaro of RPI.

In the quarterfinals, Larson and Goldberg were defeated 8-5 by Kara and Marni Powers of Hamilton while Golstein and Thomas were defeated 8-0 by Katie Campbell and Tara Ware.

The number one doubles team of Yamakawa and Farrell dropped their first match to Whitney Dolan and Madeleine Pauli of Skidmore 8-5.
