Hawks Drop Opening Round Match at NYSWCAA Tourney

CORTLAND, NY — The SUNY New Paltz women’s volleyball team dropped its opening round match to SUNYAC rival Brockport 3-0 at the New York State Women’s Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament at Corey Gymnasium in Cortland, NY this afternoon.

The 10th seeded Golden Eagles built a 10-3 lead in the opening game and ultimately prevailed 30-25. In game two, the seventh-seeded Hawks owned a 14-9 advantage before a Brockport rallied to take the second game 30-28. The Golden Eagles led from start to finish in the third game and claimed a 30-22 win to earned the right to face second-seeded SUNY Cortland in a quarterfinal match-up later this evening.

SUNY New Paltz, making its first NYSWCAA Tournament appearance since 1999, was led by sophomore Kim Clouston (Baldwinsville, NY) who finished with 10 kills. Junior Andrea Kaiser (Blue Point, NY) added eight kills and freshman Kate Becofsky (Altamont, NY) had 31 assists. The Golden Eagles (20-9) were led by Kaylen Fessette who had 42 assists, 11 digs and three service aces. Shae Gilmore added 12 kills and 13 digs.

The Hawks (27-9) regrouped to sweep 11th-seeded Fredonia 3-0 (30-25, 30-25, 30-25) in the consolation round. Kaiser had 14 kills, hit .433 for the match and earned an honorable mention spot on the all-state team. Junior Kelly Long (Endwell, NY) had 12 digs and junior Christina Mazurowski (Buffalo, NY) finished with seven blocks.
