Wong and Erikson Lead Hawks Past Geneseo

NEW PALTZ, NY — Juniors Lisa Wong (Colts Neck, NJ) and Patricia Erikson (Massapequa Park, NY) scored two goals a piece to lift the SUNY New Paltz field hockey team to a 6-0 win over State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) rival Geneseo this afternoon.

With the game one minute old, Erikson drove the length of the field and fired a shot into the cage to put the Hawks in front 1-0. Wong then slapped home a shot that deflected off the pad of Geneseo (3-6, 1-2) goalie Amanda Carver (Canastota, NY) to give SUNY New Paltz a 2-0 advantage.

The Hawks (2-6, 2-1) outshot Geneseo 12-1 in the first half and 18-4 for the game. Junior Kate Schoonmaker (High Falls, NY) closed out a three-goal first half when she scored on a penalty shot. Schoonmaker later assisted on the first collegiate goal by freshman Ashley Bocast (Chico, CA) late in the second half.

Erikson and Wong added second half goals as well while SUNY New Paltz equaled a school record for goals in a single-game. The Hawks also scored six goals in a victory over Vassar on September 17, 2003.

Sophomore Nicole Kovac (Manlius, NY) had two saves to earn her second shutout of the year.
