Talleyrand Named Head Men’s Swimming Coach

NEW PALTZ, NY — Former SUNY New Paltz swimmer and long-time Assistant Coach Dan Talleyrand will take over as the head coach of the men’s swimming program for the 2004-05 season.

Talleyrand, who assisted with both the men’s and women’s programs at SUNY New Paltz from 1998-2004, will replace Brian Williams who served as the head coach of the men’s and women’s swimming teams from 1993-2004. Williams will remain the head coach of the women’s program and will continue to serve as the associate director of athletics at SUNY New Paltz.

Talleyrand was a four-year swimmer at SUNY New Paltz from 1994-98. He was the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) champion in the 50-yard freestyle in 1997 and a team captain as a senior.

As both a swimmer and an assistant coach, Talleyrand has helped SUNY New Paltz maintain its position as one of the top programs in the SUNYAC. The men’s squad has finished among the top four at the conference championship in seven of the last eight seasons while the women’s team has finished among the top four seven straight times.

Talleyrand, a one-time SUNY New Paltz record holder in the 200-yard medley relay, helped coach the Hawks to back-to-back SUNYAC Championships in the 200 MR in 2002 and 2003.

This season, he assisted in the development of sophomore Joanna Masterson who captured the conference championship in the 100-yard freestyle. Both the SUNY New Paltz men’s and women’s swimming teams went on to finish fourth at the SUNYAC Championship and the two programs combined to produce three conference champions.

Talleyrand, who holds a degree in sociology, will also serve as the aquatics director.
