SUNY New Paltz Baseball Team Falls 4-0, 8-4 at Oneonta

ONEONTA, NY — The SUNY New Paltz baseball team lost a doubleheader to conference rival Oneonta this afternoon.

In the first game, the Hawks ran into the pitching of sophomore Mike Schellinger (Fayetteville, NY) who held SUNY New Paltz hitless into the seventh inning before sophomore right fielder Jett Cote’ (Mechanisburg, MD) legged out an infield hit to spoil his bid for a no-hitter. The right- hander allowed one hit, walked one and struck out nine to lead the Red Dragons to a 4-0 win.

Oneonta broke into the scoring column with a run in the fourth, two more in the fifth and a single run in the sixth. Sophomore third baseman Mike VanPatten (Watervilet, NY) was 2-for-3 and had an RBI single in the fourth.

Freshman Greg Campo (Staten Island, NY) started and pitched five innings for the Hawks. He allowed four hits, walked two and struck out two.

SUNY New Paltz trailed 4-0 after three in the second game and cut the Red Dragons lead in half with a two-run fourth, but eventually fell 8-4. Senior second baseman Silvestre Castro (New York, NY) had an RBI single in the top of the fourth to pull the Hawks within two. Oneonta responded with single runs in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh to lead 8-2 after seven. Castro went 2-for-3 and had a ninth inning RBI as well. The Hawks left nine runners on base in the second game including five in the seventh and eighth innings.

Sophomore catcher Josh Gutes (Hauppauge, NY) went 3-for-3 for the Hawks. Cote’ tripled and scored a run for SUNY New Paltz who played the first of three straight doubleheaders against conference opponents. The Hawks will host Plattsburgh tomorrow at 12 p.m. and will travel to Utica to play SUNY IT on Monday afternoon.

Oneonta’s John Schofield (Endicott, NY) went six and two thirds innings for the win. Sophomore Joe Gugliotta (Bayport, NY) struck out five in six innings to take the loss.
