NEW PALTZ — The Luigi and Anita Traverso Italian Studies Endowment at the State University of New York at New Paltz, presents “Old and New in the Italian Garden an Illustrated Lecture,” by John Marciari, Yale University Art Gallery, at 5 p.m., Tuesday, April 20, in Lecture Center 100.
Dr. Marciari’s slide-illustrated lecture provides a broad overview of the Italian villa garden. He will begin with a look at how the ‘Italian style’ of garden developed in the Renaissance, especially with respect to the revival of interest in Roman antiquity and to theories of art and artifice in the sixteenth century.
After addressing the question of why Italian gardens look the way that they do, he will look at two of the greatest Renaissance gardens, the Villa d’Este at Tivoli and the Villa Lante at Bagnaia, near Viterbo. The lecture will conclude with a consideration of later developments, from baroque gardens to the Italian Renaissance garden in the early 20th century.
Marciari is currently the Florence B. Selden Post-Doctoral Fellow in the Department of Prints, Drawings, & Photographs of the Yale University Art Gallery. The recipient of several national and international awards, he has lectured and published widely in the field of Renaissance art and culture.
The event is sponsored by the Luigi and Anita Traverso Italian Studies Endowment, in conjunction with the Italian Studies Program and with the cooperation of The Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art. A reception will follow the lecture.
The Luigi and Anita Traverso Endowment was created by Professor Emeritus Giancarlo Traverso to honor his and his brother Giuseppe’s parents. It provides funding for scholarships to benefit SUNY New Paltz students interested in Italian Studies and for an annual lecture series open to the public.
