Hawks Take Two From Plattsburgh

NEW PALTZ, NY — The SUNY New Paltz baseball team used a 20-run, 26-hit attack in a doubleheader sweep of conference rival Plattsburgh this afternoon.

The Hawks registered 14 hits in a 10-5 game one victory. SUNY New Paltz roughed up Plattsburgh starter Mike Bergman (Plattsburgh, NY) for six hits and seven runs in an inning and two thirds. The Hawks pushed home eight in the second inning to build a comfortable lead early. Senior Silvestre Castro (New York, NY), junior Pete Esposito (Brooklyn, NY) and sophomore Vinny McAdams (Little Falls, NY) each had two hits for SUNY New Paltz. Castro scored twice, drove in a run and stole a base. Esposito doubled twice and drove in a run while McAdams drove in two in the Hawks’ eight-run second.

Sophomore Dean Glanzman (Commack, NY) enjoyed his finest game of the season going 3-for-3 with a run batted in. Making his fourth start of the season, freshman John DeKams (Kings Park, NY) picked up his first collegiate win. DeKams went five innings, struck out four and allowed an unearned run to raise his record to 1-2.

Plattsburgh junior Matt Kahan (Levittown, NY) had a three- run triple with no out in the seventh to cut the Cardinals deficit to 10-5. SUNY New Paltz senior Alex Tate (New York, NY) then came on to retire the side with a pair of strike outs to seal the win the for the Hawks.

In the second game, sophomore Josh Gutes (Hauppauge, NY) went 2-for-4 with three runs batted in and pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn his second save of the year in a 10-7 SUNY New Paltz win.

Once again, the Hawks jumped on Plattsburgh’s starting pitching early with a run in the first, five in the second and three more in the third. SUNY New Paltz chased Cardinal starter Dave Waldron (Saranac, NY) after two plus innings. He gave up seven hits and eight runs, four of which were earned.

Junior Blake Crocitto (Lake George, NY) had two hits and drove in two to help the Hawks raise their record to 11-21 overall and 4-8 in the SUNYAC.

Sophomore Andrew Raphael (Brooklyn, NY) pitched five innings to pick up his team-leading fourth win of the season.
