Conference aims to sharpen business acumen

The State University of New York at New Paltz’s Annual Business Day Conference will take place from 8:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, April 2, in the Student Union Building. The conference, sponsored by the student chapter of the American Marketing Association (AMA) and the School of Business, will provide a look at some of the real world business and media issues that direct our business relationships.

This year’s keynote speaker is Harley Carnes, CBS Radio News announcer. Carnes is an anchor and correspondent heard nationally on 600-plus radio stations. He has been broadcasting in New York City for more than 20 years, in a career spanning more than 35 years. Working for networks such as WABC, ABC Network, WCBS and now the CBS Radio Net, Carnes has been broadcast in Atlanta, Washington, D.C., Houston, Dallas, Chicago and New York.

“The utility of the conference for college students is based on the idea that not all learning occurs within the classroom,” said Ted Clark, AMA advisor and marketing/management lecturer for the School of Business. “The conference will provide students with the opportunity to learn from successful practitioners and alumni who are eager to share their experiences.”

The conference features a day-long agenda of speakers and workshops, and is designed for undergraduate and graduate level students, as well as members of the general public interested in business.

Workshops that will be presented are:

  • Dining Etiquette
  • Effective Leadership
  • Invest Now, Spend Later
  • Sports Marketing
  • It’s Who You Know
  • Time Management
  • Business Plans
  • Alumni Roundtable

The day begins with early registration at 8:45 a.m. and a continental breakfast. The conference is preceded by a one-on-one resume review at 9 a.m. The cost is $10 for AMA members, $15 for SUNY New Paltz students, $20 for students from local colleges, and $25 for the public. Lunch is also included.
