SUNY New Paltz Women’s Basketball Team Comes Up Short Against Brockport

NEW PALTZ, NY — The SUNY New Paltz women’s basketball team led by as many as five midway through the second half but Brockport outscored the Hawks 17-11 the rest of the way and held on for a 42-41 win this afternoon at Elting Gym.

With SUNY New Paltz leading 33-32 at the seven-minute mark, Brockport scored seven straight points to go ahead 39-33. The Hawks answered the Golden Eagles’ run with five straight points and a three-pointer by freshman guard Kerri Kelty (Valley Stream, NY) with 2:40 remaining pulled SUNY New Paltz within a point at 39-38. From there the Hawks (7-17, 4-12) came up empty on their next two trips and Brockport went 3-of-4 at the foul line to go ahead 42-38 with seven seconds to play. A desperation three-point field goal by junior forward Kim Weigel (Whitestone, NY) at the buzzer made it a one-point loss for SUNY New Paltz.

SUNY New Paltz built a seven-point, first half lead when freshman forward Sandra Glazewski (Dobbs Ferry, NY) sank a three-point field goal at the 8:30 mark to put the Hawks ahead 17-10. From there, Brockport ran off nine consecutive points to take a 19-17 lead with 4:50 left in the half. Kelty then hit a three-pointer with 4:30 remaining in the half to put SUNY New Paltz back in front 20-19. The Hawks however were held scoreless the rest of the way and Brockport took a 22-20 lead at the break.

Brockport (10-14, 9-7) was led by senior guard Autumn Sereno (Pointed Post, NY) who had 10 points and five rebounds off the bench. Junior forward Mary Ahrens (Rochester, NY) added nine points and 13 rebounds for the Golden Eagles. Kelty and sophomore forward Tania Liberato (Brentwood, NY) led the Hawks with nine points each.

Senior forward Lindsay Dakin (Andover, CT) scored three points in the final home game of her four-year career at New Paltz.
