NEW PALTZ, NY — Freshman guard Kelley Germain (Albany, NY) scored 23 points to lead the SUNY New Paltz women’s basketball team to a 63-46 win over conference rival Fredonia this evening at Elting Gym.

The victory secured the Hawks one of the eight spots in next week’s conference post-season tournament. New Paltz (7-16, 4-11) will be making its first SUNYAC Tournament appearance since the 2001 season.

Germain hit five, three-point field goals and was 8-of-14 from the floor to help the Hawks earn their second victory of the season over Fredonia. Freshman guard Kerri Kelty (Valley Stream, NY) also turned in a strong effort for New Paltz and finished with 17 points, seven rebounds, and six assists.

The Hawks opened up a 30-20 lead at the break behind a defensive effort that held Fredonia to 7-of-32 shooting from the floor in the first 20 minutes. New Paltz maintained a double figure lead for the entire second half and a three-pointer by Kelty put the Hawks ahead 50-29 with eight minutes to play.

Senior forward Clare Crowley (Buffalo, NY) was the leading scorer for Fredonia with nine points. The Blue Devils are now 8-16 overall and 3-12 in the SUNYAC.
