Germain Leads Hawks Past Plattsburgh State

NEW PALTZ, NY — Freshman guard Kelley Germain (Albany, NY) pumped in 20 points to lead the SUNY New Paltz women’s basketball team to a 59-48 conference win over Plattsburgh State this evening at Elting Gym.

Germain was 5-of-10 from three-point range in helping the Hawks end a six-game losing streak. Freshman guard Kerri Kelty (Valley Stream, NY) added 12 points and junior forward Tarah Norris (Port Jervis, NY) came off the bench to score 11 points and grab six rebounds for New Paltz who is now 6-13 overall and 3-9 in the SUNYAC.

Germain and Kelty combined for 22 of the Hawks 31 first half points. Germain made four of her first six attempts from behind the arc as New Paltz built a 24-9 lead with 5:40 remaining. Plattsburgh State (6-13, 2-8) struggled throughout the first half and a 7-of-32 shooting performance resulted in a 31-19 deficit at the break.

Behind the play of senior guard Scottie Rovito (Akron, NY), the Cardinals pulled to within seven points on two occasions in the second half. Rovito sank a three-point field goal with 7:47 remaining to cut the New Paltz lead to 44-37. Germain and Kelty however answered with back-to-back three-point field goals to push the Hawks lead to 50-37 with 5:50 to play.

Plattsburgh State tried to make one last run and again got within seven, 54-47, with 1:07 to play but did not manage a field goal the rest of the way.

Rovito scored a game-high 27 points and went over the 1,000- point mark for her career.
