SUNY New Paltz Swimming Teams Sweep Oneonta

ONEONTA, NY — The SUNY New Paltz men’s and women’s swimming teams swept Oneonta in a dual meet this afternoon. The men won 112-78 to even their record at 1-1 while the women improved to 2-0 with a 120-82 victory. Both of the Red Dragon teams fell to 0-1.

On the men’s side, Jon and Jay Sousa (Albany, NY) led the Hawks by winning five individual events. Jon captured the 200-yard butterfly in a pool record time of 2:02.92 and also won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:08.01 and the 200-yard freestyle in 1:50.65. Jay finished first in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:09.90 and the 100-yard freestyle in 52.39.

Junior Chris Farrell (Sparkill, NY) won the 1000-yard freestyle in a time of 11:28.34 and senior Mark Costello (Staten Island, NY) captured the 200-yard backstroke in 2:11.19.

The women’s team put on a record-breaking performance setting seven pool records in the victory. Junior Danielle Lindner (Wantagh, NY) established two pool records by winning the 50-yard freestyle in 25.88 and the 200-yard backstroke in 2:15.16.

Junior Mallory Grempel (Babylon, NY) also set two pool records as she cruised to a first place finish in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:21.66 and in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:35.24. Sophomore Joanna Masterson (Canandaigua, NY) set a pool record in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:04.45. The quartet of Grempel, junior Andrea Ditter (New Paltz, NY), and freshmen Katie Rapp (Liverpool, NY) and Nevine Roberts (Pound Ridge, NY) swam a pool record time of 4:20.46 in the 400-yard medley relay.

The foursome of Lindner, Masterson, and freshmen Liz Delia (Oswego, NY) and Ashley Williamson (Holland Patent, NY) also established a pool record in the 400-yard relay in a time of 3:49.43.

The Hawks return to the pool when they host the United States Coast Guard Academy on Wednesday, November 12th at 5:00 pm.
