SUNY New Paltz Swimming Teams Split with Coast Guard

NEW PALTZ, NY — The SUNY New Paltz men’s and women’s swimming teams came away with a split decision this evening against the United States Coast Guard Academy.

Sophomore Joanna Masterson (Canandaigua, NY) won the 50-yard freestyle in 25.30 and the 100-yard freestyle in 55.99 to help the Hawks earn a 113-92 victory over Coast Guard. Junior Danielle Linder (Wantagh, NY) also won the 200-yard backstroke for the Hawks in 2:13.49 and the 200-yard freestyle in 2:01.24.

Kent Yeung (Flushing, NY), Danny Lo (Toms River, NJ), Jon Sousa (Albany, NY) and Mark Costello (Staten Island, NY) won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:42.19 to give New Paltz an early lead. Senior Garrett Faulkner (Hopkinsville, KY) won the 1000-yard freestyle in 10:51.54 to give Coast Guard a lead which they would never relinquish as they sailed on to a 114-89 victory over the Hawks. Sousa was a double winner as he captured the 200-yard IM in 2:03.09 and the 200-yard butterfly in 2:01.87.

SUNY New Paltz Highlights vs. Coast Guard

Men- Junior Jay Sousa (Albany, NY) placed second in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:12.57.

Freshman Danny Lo won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:26.01.

Women- Junior Mallory Grempel (Babylon, NY) posted second place finishes in the 200-yard IM and the 200-yard breaststroke with times of 2:23.41 and 2:48.43 respectively.
