SUNY New Paltz Cross Country Teams Close Out the Season at NCAA Regional Championship

MT. MORRIS, NY — The SUNY New Paltz men’s and women’s cross country teams competed at the NCAA Division III Atlantic Regional Championship this morning at Letchworth State Park in Mt. Morris, New York.

The men’s squad finished 21st among 30 schools and completed the meet with 579 points. The Hawks were led by senior John Zarella (Mahopac, NY) who finished 41st with a time of 26:30. Senior Dan Holton (Rhinebeck, NY) was the number two finisher for New Paltz and 75th overall with a time of 27:10. Freshman Matt McLean (Oswego, NY) came in 139th at 28:17. Junior Jason Letts (Plattsburgh, NY) was 174th with a time of 29:12. Rounding out the top five for New Paltz was junior George Correa (Central Islip, NY) who came in 177th with a time of 29:22.

Ted Turner of SUNY Geneseo won the 8,000-meter event with a time 24:26. He helped lead Geneseo to the team championship. The Knights had three runners finish among the top six and finished with 47 points.

In the women’s meet, SUNY New Paltz was also 21st among 30 schools. The Hawks totaled 565 points and were led by sophomore Kate Choromanski (Shelton, CT) who finished 91st with a time of 25:44. Sophomore Janet Walsh (Baldwinsville, NY) was 102nd with a time of 25:52. Sophomore Heather DeBuono (Fishkill, NY) was 115th with a time of 26:05. Freshman Alida Van Almelo (Groton, NY) finished 143rd in 26:57. Freshman Kelly Dunphy (Hauppauge, NY) rounded out the top five for New Paltz. She was 146th with a time of 27:01

Beth Vesey of The College of New Jersey finished first in the 6,000-meter race with a time of 22:39 while leading the Lions to the team championship. TCNJ outdistanced second place Ithaca 46-98.
