NEW PALTZ — The Baroque era that encompassed the years of 1600-1750 was an age of opulence. Inspired by the court of Louis XIV of France and driven by the new wealth of the middle classes, the arts flourished in ornate, intricate and grandiose style. On Tuesday, September 30, the SUNY New Paltz Department of Music will present a concert of music from the Baroque era performed by an ensemble comprising musicians of the Hudson Valley Philharmonic.
Titled “Glories of the Baroque,” the chamber concert features works of J. C. Bach, Boismortier, Telemann and Gabrielli. Members of the ensemble include SUNY New Paltz music faculty members Carole Cowan, violinist/concertmaster; Susan Seligman, principal cellist; and Marcia Gates, principal flutist. Joining them will be Mary Jane Corry, harpsichordist and SUNY professor emeritus; and Philip West, oboist and professor emeritus of the Eastman School of Music.
“Glories of the Baroque” is the second recital of a three-part music concert series planned for the fall season. The third recital scheduled for November 4, will include works by Beethoven, Barber and Popper.
The program includes Quintet in D Major of J.C. Bach, one of the first compositions to use the harpsichord as a solo voice in equal partnership with the other instruments. Other works include duets for violin and oboe by the prolific French composer, Joseph Bodin de Boismortier, an unaccompanied cello composed by Domenico Gabrielli in 1689, and a quintet from Tafelmusik I by Georg Philipp Telemann, one of the most prolific and well-known composers of his time.
The chamber concert will be presented on Tuesday, September 30th at 8:00 p.m. in the Julien J. Studley Theatre. Tickets are $5 general admission, $4 faculty and staff, and $3 students. Tickets are available at the theatre one hour before performance. For more information call 845-257-3872.
