Hawks Drop Opener at Kean

UNION, NJ — Kean University sophomore midfielder Cherie McNellis (Gloucester, NJ) and sophomore forward Laura Pointon (Hamilton, NJ) each tallied a first goal to lead the Cougars past New Paltz, 2-0 this evening.

The Hawks, who were playing their season opener, surrendered both scores in the first 10 minutes of the contest. McNellis’ goal came 4:43 into the game when she converted off a penalty corner from Deanna Thomas (Salem, NJ). Five minutes later, Pointon scored in front of the cage to extend the Cougars lead. Kean held a 9-1 shot advantage after the first 35 minutes.

In the second half, New Paltz outshot Kean 6-2 and held an 11-2 advantage in penalty corners but couldn’t capitalize on its opportunities.

Kean goalie Concetta Valerio (Norristown, PA) made two saves to pick up the shutout. New Paltz sophomore goalie Erica Engstrom (Montauk, NY) had three saves on the evening.
